From 1848 - 1852, Alfred Russell Wallace travelled in Brazil, exploring the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers and tributaries. During these travels, he collected specimens, especially of insects, birds and other animals, and observed the people and their cultures, as well as the flora, fauna and geography of the region.
