This work is a peculiar discussion of the philosophy of clothing, purported to be based on a work by a mysterious German professor of "Things in General" whose life and times are extensively discussed as well as aspects of his philosophy. The novel reaches deep into many philosophical and anthropological considerations. It is written with a large infusion of irony and Carlyle's typical panache. (Summary by Peter Tucker)
