Dystopias & Early Science Fiction

Wells, Verne, Zamyatin and the birth of the future.

Before the word "science fiction" existed, these novels imagined time machines, Martian invasions, invisible men and engineered societies. H. G. Wells alone wrote the template for half the genre in a single decade. Zamyatin's We, written in 1921, is the direct ancestor of Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four.
